Legal, Financial, And Emotional Divorce Support

People who are struggling with divorce should not be afraid to seek help from agencies that offer divorce support. Forms of divorce support include legal services, financial support, and emotional support.

The legal process of getting a divorce can be confusing. A divorcing spouse's lawyer can be a valuable source of knowledge about the legal process and how the individual will be affected by the divorce settlement. A divorce lawyer is a legal advocate for the divorcing spouse that they represent and works to obtain the best possible divorce settlement for their client.

Friends and family are often excellent source of emotional support for people struggling through the divorce process. A therapist can also be a valuable source of emotional support and can help the individual cope with the stress of the divorce and focus on taking positive steps in their lives.

Divorce often has a negative impact on one or both divorcing spouses. The spouse with primary custody need may need help with housing expenses and Child-related costs such as childcare and groceries.

If the divorcing spouse meets the criteria for low-income family, there may be assistance through state programs that can offer food stamps, help with childcare expenses, and job assistance or training programs. Low-income divorcing spouses should check with their state's Department of public welfare to see if there are any programs for which they may qualify and can help with some of their unmet financial needs.

The federal program known as HUD provides rental housing for low-income families. The rent is calculated on a sliding scale based on the family's income.

Unfortunately, the HUD programs often have long waiting lists, so even if a spouses not sure if they may need low-income housing, they should consider putting their name on the waiting list as soon as possible. If the person does not need low-income housing at the time their name comes up, they can remove their name from the list.

For people who own or rent a home and need assistance with heating costs, some programs provide assistance with heating bills. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal program that helps with heating fuel costs or electric bills related to heating for people who qualify. Low-income families can apply for the program in the fall.
